John Tory's kickoff speech
To make Toronto more liveable, we need to tackle our transit and traffic problems. I will fix transit and traffic congestion. My highest priority is to build the Yonge Street Relief Line and the Scarborough Subway. Gridlocked streets and overcrowded subways and streetcars not only hurt our economy, they keep us from getting to work on time and make it harder for us to get home to our families. The time to build is now - eventually just won’t cut it anymore.
Toronto can and should be a more affordable city to live in. This starts with keeping taxes low, particularly our property taxes. I will cut waste at City Hall and focus on improving city services. Every dollar wasted is a dollar that cannot be used to build transit, repair roads or invest in priority neighbourhoods. Your government needs to answer to you - everyday and for every dollar spent.
I will go into work each day with the goal of getting things done at City Hall because I have a plan, I know how to build consensus and I will have enough votes on council to actually deliver, not just talk about it. Making City Hall more functional means making sure council is accountable, and working for you, every single day. Toronto's elected officials work and answer to you, the citizens - not the other way around.
